Working out is one of the best things that we can do to stay in shape and get healthy, but not all of us are exercising as often as we should. A study has found that almost 80 percent of adult Americans don’t get the recommended amount of exercise per week. To be healthy, the American College of Sports Medicine recommends 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week. For very busy people, working out this much may prove to be a challenge, but those who are unable to meet this goal can still benefit from some activity. Making time for exercise every day can surely help to meet your fitness goals, and keep you healthy from the inside out. Here are 5 easy ways to sneak in more exercise every day.
Take the Stairs
If your office is located in the first few floors of the building, you can sneak in more exercise every day by taking the stairs. A research shows that taking the stairs improved participants’ cardiorespiratory fitness, and it was previously found that people who increase their levels of cardiorespiratory fitness from poor to “fit” levels decreased their risks of early death by 38 percent. It’s also a great way to burn fat, so aim to do this exercise at least thrice a week.
Head To the Playground
Busy parents who have no time to exercise can hit two birds with one stone by taking their kids to the playground. However, don’t just sit there and watch your child play—go on and join in the fun! Have a go on the monkey bars, or take a turn on the swings for a good core workout. It may not give you a flat belly overnight, but going to the playground at least three times a week allows you to bond with your child while getting fit at the same time.
Walk or Bike To Work
If your workplace is just a few blocks away from your home, one of the best ways to make time for exercise is to walk or bike to work. If this isn’t feasible, you can take your car to work but park it farther away in a safe place and walk the extra distance. If you commute to work, you can get off the subway or bus at an earlier stop and walk to the office from there. Every step you make counts towards having a healthier body.
Do Some Housework
Doing housework may not be your idea of fun, but it sure is a great way to lose weight. In fact, you can burn up to 250 calories an hour just doing your everyday chores. To make cleaning up more fun, play some upbeat music and crank up the tunes while you’re mopping, sweeping, making the bed, or cleaning the bathroom.
Exercise While Watching Your Favorite TV Show
Instead of lounging on the couch and eating popcorn while watching your TV, grab a few dumbbells or park your exercise bike in front of the TV and work out for the duration of the show. You can also do this every time you’re having a Netflix marathon—simply exercise for as long as it takes one episode to run, and you’re on your way to fitness and health.
Finding time to squeeze in a workout during your busy day can be a challenge, but it can be done. With a bit of determination and creativity, you can certainly find a way to sneak in more exercise every day for a healthier and fitter body.
